Lower Haysden

Lower Haysden is in Tonbridge, Kent. It is the site of a former medieval settlement that was abandoned due to flooding from the River Medway. Today it has been replaced by modern housing developments, but there are still traces of its history visible on the landscape today.

The early history of Lower Haysden is not recorded with certainty and so much must be inferred from archaeological findings. The first evidence for occupation at Lower Haysden comes in Roman times when people began living near Tonbridge, including around what would become Lower Haysden in order to farm land nearer the river than higher up where they had previously lived – this may have been because even then floods were an issue or alternatively because they wanted more fertile farmland close to water courses as life became less dependent upon.

Lower Haysden is in the Tonbridge district of Kent. It has been occupied since at least Roman times and possibly earlier, but it was not until 1969 that Lower Haysden became its own civil parish with ecclesiastical connections to Tonbridge. The first evidence for occupation comes from a survey in 1839 when many farmhouses are shown as ‘derelict’ or ‘in ruins’. This suggests that people were abandoning the area well before this date due to flooding problems or competition from more fertile land elsewhere.

leave Castle Signs located at 18 Chaucer Gardens, Tonbridge TN9 2QA, head south on upper haysden lane you will get to Smart Pet Services located at Beverley Cres, Tonbridge TN9 2RD
